The History of Circumcision (Old Testament Circumcision)

1st time circumcision mentioned in Bible

Genesis 17:9-14 (1-27)
"God said further to Abraham, "Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants. A servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant."

What do we know from this Scripture?

1. Covenant between YHWH and man - vs. 10

2. This is an everlasting covenant - vs. 13

6. We multiply - vs. 2

17 - Old Testament Circumcision

The Old Testament, foretells the New Testament Circumcision (Old Testament Circumcision of Flesh New Testament Circumcision of Heart)

Jeremiah 4:3-4 - "For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, "Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord and remove the foreskins of your heart, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, or else My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds."

What does this scripture say?

1. Circumcise yourself to YHWH (LORD)

2. Remove the foreskins of your heart.

This scripture hints strongly of the New Testament Circumcision of the heart: Deuteronomy 30:6 (1-10) - vs. 6: "Moreover the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love theLord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live."

In the Old Testament man performed the circumcision - now the new circumcision of the heart is done by God Himself!

Romans 2:28-29 (17-29) - vs. 28-29: "For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. Sounds like Matthew 23:25-26: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also."

Benefits of Circumcision of the Heart

Colossians 2:11-13 (8-15) - vs. 11-13: "and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,"

This New Testament Circumcision is made without man's hands and is also known as the "Circumcision of Christ" and happens when we are buried with Jesus in His baptism (vs. 12)

What are the benefits?

1. The body of the sins of the flesh are put off - vs. 11

2. All our sins are forgiven - vs. 13

3. Made alive together with Jesus - vs. 13
